Many people have asked me about the family-friendliness of the Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Footloose. As a father of three young boys – ages 5, 8, and 12 – I’ve asked myself the same question.

I’ve been in quite a few CUTC productions (including this one), and I want my children to be exposed to the performing arts as much as possible, especially since the arts are such a big part of our family’s life. That said, there have been some shows I wouldn’t let my kids near (last year’s production of The Who’s Tommy and this year’s Rocky Horror Show immediately come to mind). But I’m happy to say that Footloose is a production all three of them will be able to attend.

Footloose is a compelling story about a high school senior named Ren McCormack who’s uprooted from his home in Chicago and transported to the small town of Bomont. He tries hard to blend in, but he’s met with resistance at every turn. Yet Ren’s biggest surprise comes when he finds out that, in Bomont, dancing is against the law. With help from his peers, he sets out to change the status quo.

CUTC’s summer productions are traditionally geared toward the whole family, and this show is no exception. There’s very little swearing – even less than in the original script – and violence is limited to an occasional threat or talk of a fight (except for one scene in which Ren is slapped by his uncle). There are also a few instances of mild sexual innuendo that will go over the heads of young children but might draw a giggle from preteens and adolescents.

If CUTC’s production of Footloose were a movie, it would most likely garner a light PG rating, and I can recommend it without reservation as both a parent and performer. With its upbeat music, infectious dancing, and positive message, it’s definitely a show the whole family can enjoy.

The Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company’s production of FOOTLOOSE will be at Parkland College Theatre. The show runs from August 5-15. Show times are as follows:

Aug. 5, 6, 7, 13, 14 @ 7:30 PM
Aug. 8, 14, 15 @ 2:30 PM

Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, $6 for children 12 and under. Reserved seating tickets may be purchased online or at the Parkland box office immediately before each show.

Jason Cerezo is an active member of the Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company. He has acted, designed sets, and currently serves on the board of directors as the marketing coordinator. In Footloose, Jason plays the role of Ren’s Uncle Wes. Jason lives in Champaign with his wife and three sons.
